The small community of William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia’s far north became a hive of activity on Saturday September 15th when their annual campdraft and bronco branding was held.
Although quite a number of events in the state have been postponed due to the Equine Influenza virus threat, the local gymkhana committee were able to obtain a permit to run the event. Special precautions and protocols were put in place in regard to the horses and riders. Thankfully none of the horses coughed or sneezed during the weekend!
The competitors in the campdraft were up and about early and the action started at 7.30am. Junior, Juvenile, Maiden, Ladies and Open divisions were completed by lunchtime. Southern Campdrafting Association judge Duncan Brown from Albury Wodonga flew in to judge the events.
The Junior Campdraft was won by Lachlan Hoddle from Leigh Creek while the Juvenile event was won by Kaeli Mengerson from Depot Springs Stn, Copley on Bella with 20 points, closely followed by Georgie Black from Quorn on Nandy with 19 points. The Ladies Campdraft was won by Narelle Black from Quorn riding Nandy, with Kaeli Mengerson in second position.
In the Maiden Campdraft local participant Andrew Clarke from Allandale Station via Oodnadatta took out first and second positions, followed by another local Gordon Warren from Anna Creek Station, Peter Moroney ,Wertaloona Station,Copley Bevan Roberts, Victor Harbor and Lachy Johnson Wertaloona Station making up the six placings.
Corey Ferguson, North Moolooloo Stn via Copley had a good win in the Open Campdraft scoring 151 points, followed by Peter Moroney, Wertaloona Station with 105, Bevan Roberts, Victor Harbor 103, Corey Ferguson 93, Robbie Schmidt, Leigh Creek 39 and Corey Ferguson 32.
Following the completion of the campdraft events, the Bronco Branding took place. The day ended with an evening meal and dance.
